Young Yellowjacket

All students at Young Elementary will be challenged to achieve, to think smart and to feel special in a warm, supportive and positive environment. As we prepare Young minds for a brighter future, let's say "yes to school."

Nestled in a peaceful, wooded neighborhood adjacent to Miller Intermediate School, Young Elementary fosters a challenging, supportive environment where community, parents, teachers and other staff members work together for the good of all students. When it opened in August 1980, Young Elementary was the 41st school of the Pasadena Independent School District. Named in honor of Adella Young, the first woman to serve as a trustee on Pasadena's School Board, it was also the fourth modified open concept facility.

The school staff consists of 40 full-time teachers, plus a wide range of support personnel. Together the staff has continued to carry on the concept of each child being unique blending of physical, emotional and intellectual characteristics. It is our conviction that each child learns differently; therefore, each requires a variety of approaches and strategies. In each learning center, orderly, disciplined and varied activities aim at making the difference for every child.

The mission of Young Elementary clearly states a belief in quality instruction and high expectations in a positive learning climate. A school-wide discipline management plan exists as well as a "Right Choice" program that acknowledges and rewards students who make quality decisions and responsible choices.

Students receive recognition regularly for achievements in academics and citizenship. This includes Honor Roll/Merit Roll breakfasts, Science Fair Awards, Perfect Attendance Awards, Right Choice tickets and various classroom awards.

Community, parents and businesses join together to support Young Elementary in a structured mentoring program in language arts. HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) breaks the cycle of student failure by matching students with trained mentors who provide one-to-one instruction, strengthening students' reading skills. Approximately 100 volunteers devote their time and efforts on a weekly basis and have helped Young earn the HOSTS National "Exemplary" Award in language arts for four years.

A variety of school-wide activities illustrate the pride and enthusiasm at Young Elementary. Students work in a positive and safe environment with the support of a caring staff. Classrooms are alive with students developing a life-long love for learning and finding their place in the world as productive, responsible citizens.
